With expanded songs, increased atmospherics and impressive musicianship, this Swedish band continues to make me wonder how they haven’t blown up like Mastodon since both acts last three albums have paralleled each other in terms of quality and progression.

This is the book that started my love of crime and film noir.  Now all I want are superflawed protagonists, internal monologues and girls who ruin your life.  I now take you to this review from Comics Bulletin that highlights why people should buy this book.

Pax Romana #3

Jonathan Hickman’s high concept historical saga continues and thank goodness.  In short, this book is about a group of scientific, political and miliary figures who decide to rule the world through socio-political change by traveling back in time to the peak of the Holy Roman Empire.  Hickman’s dialogue is sharp, his plotting is solid and his art design is clever and very unique.  Also, this book had this exchange.

“Well, it’s too late for that, I introduced the scientific method to a group of scholars last week a full 1300 years early.
“And?”
“Went well.”

Dark Tower: Treachery #1
(Marvel)

The past two Dark Tower series, The Gunslinger Born and The Long Road Home, were fantastic and, surprisingly, Eisner absent (although they did get some nods).  So far this is the start of another great one, with Peter David’s writing fitting oh so well in Mr. Stephen King’s western world.  But the star of the show, and it always will be as long as this team stays together, is the art.  Seriously!  Go find the book and just LOOK at the pages of Jae Lee and Richard Isanove.  Flippin’ Gorgeous.

That’s right.  I have one.  Even though I’m sure everyone who reads this already knows that.  For those who don’t know, here are the basics.  I do a radio show (actually two) for the Berklee Internet Radio Network (BIRN) that focuses on the sweetness of Rock from all eras and genres.  It’s called Pirate Radio: M1A1, is on from 9 to 11 on wednesdays and is done with my co-host Double A who suckered me into doing this two years ago.

Anyways, I’ll let you know of any themes or interesting tidbits that might be on our show.  There is one epic topic that might come up later but for tomorrow, we’re just playing some muzak.  Any requests?

Holy crap guys!  Yeah, it’s been a month.  But you know what?  That’s fine.  My brother was in town for a whole month and even through all the smoking and height differences, we got along really well considering we hadn’t really lived together for quite some time.  So now there is this site, this poor neglected site which I started with the best intentions until summer grabbed me with it’s sweaty hands and pulled me into a pit with bits of laziness and diligence (for finding a job that is).  Well guess what?  with all the newness that’s going on in my life and actually organizing it for once, it’s about time I do this thing for real.  I mean, check out this newness since my last post.

New apartment, new roommates, new glasses, new haircut, new job and even possibly, a new attitude…..sorry.  Anyways, I’ve made a schedule for myself for content and I’ve already planned what I’m going to do for this week so let’s do this!  Also, if I fall behind, someone get on my god damn case.  PLEASE!

I kind of wanted this little section to be less pretentious and more straight to the point so let’s give it another shot. I had heard of this band before and had heard some of their songs from their album Coward and it felt like being yelled at by a PMS-ed postal worker. Let’s just say I pretty much felt like shit afterward.  The music was still good but too much of a downer. But then I hear the first song, “Cooker”, off their latest album The Ruiner and I immediately go to Newbury Comics and purchase it. It was such an intense and in your face track, where all the pieces fit incredibly well, that it never seems like the rest of the album can match that first track. That’s not to say the rest of the album sucks because it’s actually quite the contrary. The band is a tight unit throughout the entire album, it’s just “Cooker” is just that damn good. Julie Christmas sounds like one crazy vocalist lady and I feel like she could beat the shit out of me while listening to these songs. Anyways, I can’t wait to see this band live and I hope they freak out on stage as much as they do in my head.
